Another blow has been dealt to the wool carpet industry following a decision by Kāinga Ora to refuse to use the natural fibre in state houses.
The refusal is contrary to a directive made by the coalition government for government agencies to prefer wool over synthetics in their buildings.
Kāinga Ora’s decision makes them the second government agency to rule out wool after the Ministry of Education decided in 2023 it would supply around 760 rural schools with synthetic carpet tiles from American manufacturer Miliken.
Kāinga Ora released a proposal for companies to provide carpet and underlay on November 4 through the Government Electronic Tendering System (GETS), but made it clear it would not accept wool carpet – bold font and all.
“We are not looking to procure a wool carpet,” the Request For Proposal (RFP) read.
